Secrets of a Superhacker by The Knightmare - Book (Used)
Published in 1994, this book provides a good overview of hacking and some techniques that can be used. This is for the most part, platform-agnostic advice. It is certainly dated, and likely was a bit even at the time of publishing. I have heard some criticisms of the book as being too n00bish, but it was great for ideas when I was starting out. I like that the book is more concept-oriented, and leaves the exact technical details as an exercise for the reader.
Some topics covered include:
• history of hacking
• dumpster diving and data recovery from found disks
• writing fake logon prompts in BASIC
• shoulder surfing
• dialing into BBS's
• computer laws
• how not to get caught
As I gaze upon this book, I realize that as far as physical characteristics go, this is an "ugly red book that won't fit on a shelf". It is not THE ugly red book that won't fit on a shelf.
